TCC offers tax-prep for qualified taxpayers in 2017

As part of the IRS-sponsored Virginia Income Assistance Program (VITA), Tidewater Community College will offer free tax preparation assistance in February and March for individuals in low-to-moderate income levels.

TCC accounting Professor Cynthia Bird administers the tax-preparation as a region-wide community service through VITA. Students enrolled in Principles of Federal Taxation who have passed a certified exam prepare the tax returns under her supervision. All TCC-assisted tax returns will be reviewed and filed electronically, free of charge.

Those seeking tax assistance must bring a valid photo ID, Social Security card, 2015 tax returns and 2016 tax documents.

Tax help is available during the following times at the Virginia Beach Campus:

  • Mondays from 7:30 – 9 p.m. starting on Feb. 27 through March 27; closed March 6 for spring break

    Advanced Technology Center, Room 210

  • Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting on Feb. 8 through March 22; closed March 8 for spring break;

    Advanced Technology Center, Room 243

No appointments are necessary; first come, first serve basis.

A partial listing of items outside the scope of VITA (and therefore not eligible for free tax assistance) include noncash donations greater than $5,000, depreciation calculations, income from rental property, royalties, partnerships, estates, trusts, farm income, household employers, kiddie tax and foreign tax using Form 1116.
