TCC’s Radiography program earns re-accreditation

Tidewater Community College’s Radiography program received an eight-year continuing accreditation term from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

“By earning the full eight years of accreditation, students can be sure that the program meets high standards and that, as graduates, they will be ready to take on highly technical aspects, along with patient care responsibilities of the profession,” said Ellyn Hodgis, program director.

Eight years is the maximum duration awarded by JRCERT.

TCC’S 72-credit Associate of Applied Science in Radiography features specialized courses in radiography with concentrated study in the basic sciences, mathematics and general education. Graduates boast a 96 percent pass rate on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) examination, the industry standard.

Students in the program learn on state-of-the-art imaging equipment at the Regional Health Professions Center on the Virginia Beach Campus. The program includes clinical rotations with every major health care system in Hampton Roads.

Graduates work as radiologic technologists in multiple settings that range from hospitals to imaging centers to clinics and doctors’ offices, where they are integral members of skilled health care teams.

“The combination of our excellent faculty, wonderful students and rigorous curricula produces graduates well-positioned and prepared to move directly into the workforce,” said Tom Calogrides, dean for TCC’s Division of Health Professions.

Many radiologic technologists earn additional advanced ARRT certifications through TCC mammography courses, and a Career Studies Certificate in Computed Tomography is offered each fall.
