TCC uses multiple measures, including the Virginia Placement Test, to determine a student’s readiness for college-level English and math courses.
Most new students must take the English and math placement tests. These are not admission tests. They evaluate your college readiness. You don’t want to be placed in a course lower than your actual skill level because you’ll take longer to complete your program and you’ll be paying unnecessary tuition – so it’s important you take testing seriously.
You may be exempt from placement tests if you can demonstrate your readiness with previous high school course work, SAT/ACT scores, or other criteria.
Placement tests are free, and you can take them on any TCC campus.
Planning your tests
Tests generally take between 3-4 hours. You may not start an exam 3 hours or less before the center closes. Make sure you bring a photo ID and your student ID number with you when you take the test!
Taking your tests
We offer dedicated testing centers on each of our four campuses where you can take your placement tests.
You will be ready to meet with an academic advisor! You may be able to enroll in college-level English and math courses immediately or you may be required to take one or more developmental education courses, depending on your chosen program of study.
